The Nude In The Woods

John Stratton was still clinging to life when Max carried him into the emergency room at Woodland Hills Hospital. Penny Wilson, the drugged sixteen-year-old, arrived a few minutes later by ambulance. Hollister was brought in by a patrol sergeant. Jose Mendoza was handcuffed when Detective Parker pushed him through the double doors into the emergency room reception area. His nose was bloody, and he was still dressed in the leather loin cloth. Parker and Torres had found the frightened Mendoza cowering in a bedroom closet.

The Sandoval home on Green Rush Place was cordoned off as the officer involved shooting team from the Use of Force unit, along with a team from the Scientific Investigation Division, went to work. The quiet cul-de-sac was jammed with a collection of police cars as well as a crush of reporters and mini-cam vans. Behind the wide yellow tape that warned "Police Line - Do Not Cross" a voice among the crowd of curious spectators asked, "Who got shot?"

"Someone shot a tree trimmer," a female voice answered.

A block away near the foot of the hill on LeFloss Street a second team of Robbery-Homicide detectives worked with a coroner’s deputy removing the body of Raoul Sandoval from the swimming pool of Tom and Janice Spalding. The once blue pool water now had a distinct pink tint to it. Tom Spalding was already on the telephone talking to his attorney brother-in-law. He wanted damages for property as well as mental anguish. The city would later quietly settle out of court.

The P.M. watch commander at Hollywood Division dispatched a radio car to Lieutenant Stratton’s Van Nuy's home to pick up his wife. Denise Stratton arrived at the hospital seventeen minutes after her husband's death.

An intern and a black nurse worked at removing splinters and thorns from Hollister's hands and chin. He was bruised and weary but had no serious injuries. He felt foolish getting attention when he knew John Stratton was somewhere in the hospital. As long as the doctor didn't come in, he had the hope the lieutenant was still alive.

The door to the treatment room swung open. It was Max and a doctor in a blood spotted surgical gown. The doctor looked tired. Max was red eyed and sober, but he forced a grin. "How you feeling?"

"How's Stratton?"

"I’m sorry. For all practical considerations," the doctor answered, "he was dead when they brought him in.”

"You got the sonofabitch though," Max said patting Hollister’s shoulder.
